    We will have two in-person, live previews for those who would like to view the items before they bid here at the auction house. Online Estate Sale Auction on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, @ 7 pm CST – The auction will start closing at 7 pm one lot at a time and end when all the bidding stops.

    Online bidding begins as soon as the catalog is uploaded. Auction begins to close at 7 pm CST. Each lot ends in 30-sec intervals; last-minute bids extend the bidding for three more minutes on that lot. This auction has the feel of a live auction, though the online bidders are the ones keeping the bidding going. So get online at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 21, and watch how the online auction system has the feel of a live auction.

    Online Auction Bidding: Maximum Bids & Soft Close Explained

    Online bidding is easier when you understand what the system is doing. Here’s how maximum bids, bid increments and soft-close bidding work—and how to set your own limit before the auction closes.

    How Online Auction Bidding Works

    In a timed online auction, each lot is open for bidding until its scheduled closing time. You can place bids as the auction progresses, or you can enter the highest amount you are willing to bid and allow the bidding system to compete for you up to that limit.

    The important part is this: entering a maximum bid does not mean you automatically pay that amount. The system advances your bid only as needed, using the auction’s bid increments, until you are either the high bidder or your maximum has been exceeded.

    THE SIMPLE VERSION

    You choose your limit. The bidding system does the incremental bidding for you. You pay the winning bid—not automatically your full maximum.

    What Is a Maximum Bid?

    A maximum bid—sometimes called a max bid or proxy bid—is the highest amount you authorize the online bidding system to bid on your behalf for a particular lot.

    Other bidders do not see your maximum. If someone places a competing bid, the system can increase your bid automatically by the required increment, but it will not intentionally bid beyond the maximum you entered.

    A Maximum-Bid Example

    Suppose a lot is currently at $50 and you decide you are comfortable bidding as high as $100. You enter $100 as your maximum. If no one competes with you, you may win for substantially less than $100. If another bidder raises the price, the system can continue bidding for you in the required increments until your $100 limit is reached.

    If another bidder has already entered a higher maximum, you may be outbid immediately. That does not mean the system ignored your bid—it means another bidder had already authorized a higher limit.

    What Is a Soft Close?

    A soft close helps keep a timed online auction competitive near the end. When qualifying bids are placed close to a lot’s scheduled closing time, additional bidding time may be added according to that auction’s settings.

    That gives active bidders an opportunity to respond instead of allowing someone to win simply by submitting a last-second bid that no one has time to answer.

    Think of it like a live auction. An auctioneer does not normally end bidding while bidders are still actively competing. The bidding continues until the competition stops. A soft close brings that principle to a timed online auction.

    Why We Don’t Give One Universal Soft-Close Time

    Soft-close rules can vary by auction. Always read the auction information and terms for the specific sale you are entering so you know how its closing procedure works.

    Set Your Own Price—Before the Bidding Gets Exciting

    One of the advantages of using a maximum bid is that you can decide what an item is worth to you before the final minutes of bidding. Look at the photographs and description, consider the auction terms and additional charges, and choose the highest bid you are comfortable making.

    Then let the bidding system work within that limit. If another bidder is willing to go higher, you can decide whether to increase your maximum—but you do not have to get caught up in bidding beyond the amount you planned.

    Before You Place a Bid

    • Read the lot description and review all photographs. Ask questions before bidding if something is unclear.
    • Read the auction terms. Buyer’s premium, payment methods, pickup, shipping and other requirements can vary by auction.
    • Know whether the lot can be shipped or requires pickup. Do not assume every item has the same fulfillment options.
    • Choose your spending limit. Remember to consider applicable buyer’s premium, taxes, shipping or other charges in addition to your winning bid.
    • Double-check your bid before confirming it. Auction bids are generally binding, and cancellation is not guaranteed.
    • Watch the closing process. A soft-close auction may remain active beyond the originally displayed closing time while bidding continues.

    Online Bidding FAQ

    Will I automatically pay my full maximum bid?

    No. Your maximum is the upper limit you authorize. The system bids incrementally as needed, so your winning bid may be lower than your maximum.

    Can other bidders see my maximum?

    No. Other bidders can see the current bidding activity, but your private maximum is not displayed to them.

    Why was I outbid immediately?

    Another bidder may already have entered a higher maximum bid. When your bid was placed, the system automatically responded on that bidder’s behalf.

    Why did the auction closing time extend?

    The lot may be using a soft-close format. A qualifying bid near closing can add bidding time so active bidders have an opportunity to respond. The exact procedure depends on the terms of that auction.
