  • Buying a Firearm at an Online Auction: What Buyers Need to Know

AMP BUYER GUIDE • FIREARMS & FFL TRANSFERS

Buying a firearm through an online auction includes an additional step after the bidding ends: the firearm must be transferred in accordance with applicable federal, state and local requirements. Asset Marketing Pros is a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) in Trinity, Texas, and we help winning bidders understand the transfer process.

The Auction Is Online. The Firearm Transfer Is Not.

You can browse, register and bid online, but winning the auction does not by itself complete the firearm transfer. The transfer must be completed through the appropriate FFL process before the firearm can be released to the buyer.

That may happen at our licensed facility in Trinity, Texas, or—when permitted—through another Federal Firearms Licensee in the buyer’s area.

    THE MOST IMPORTANT FIRST STEP

Register and bid in the name of the person who will be the actual buyer/transferee. Do not use another person’s bidder account simply because they will be picking up the firearm. The information used for the auction and transfer needs to accurately reflect the transaction.

    1. Before You Bid

Start by reading the complete auction terms and the description for the firearm you are considering. Firearm laws and transfer requirements can vary by the buyer’s residence, the type of firearm and other circumstances.

    • Make sure you are legally eligible to receive the firearm.
    • Review the photographs, description and condition information for the lot.
    • Check the auction terms for buyer’s premium, payment, pickup and shipping information.
    • If the firearm will need to be shipped, contact a receiving FFL in your area before bidding and ask whether they will accept the transfer.
    • Ask your receiving FFL about its transfer fee and any state or local requirements that may apply to you.

    2. Register and Bid

AMP’s online auctions are hosted through HiBid. Open the current auction catalog, register for the sale and review the individual lot before placing a bid. Auction-platform screens can change over time, so this guide focuses on the process rather than screenshots that may quickly become outdated.

Before confirming a bid, check the amount carefully and make sure you understand the auction terms. For more help with maximum bids and timed online bidding, see our guide to maximum bids and soft-close bidding.

    3. If You Win: Choose Your Transfer Method

    Local Pickup in Trinity

When the transfer can legally be completed at AMP, the buyer comes to our licensed facility at 156 N Robb St, Trinity, TX 75862. The buyer must provide acceptable identification and complete the required transfer process before the firearm is released.

    Transfer Through Another FFL

If the firearm needs to be shipped, AMP ships it to an eligible receiving Federal Firearms Licensee—not directly to the buyer. The receiving dealer completes the transfer with the buyer under the laws and requirements that apply to that transaction.

    4. Form 4473, Identification & Background Check

For a firearm transfer from an FFL to an unlicensed buyer, the transfer process generally includes ATF Form 4473, verification of the buyer’s identity and the required NICS background-check procedure unless a lawful exception applies.

Bring current government-issued identification that satisfies the requirements for the transfer. If the address on your identification is not your current residence address, additional government-issued documentation may be required. Contact AMP before pickup if you are unsure what to bring.

    Buyers Under 21

Federal law provides an enhanced NICS review process for transferees under age 21. If NICS notifies the FFL that additional investigation is needed, the transfer can remain pending for up to 10 business days in total while that review is completed. This is not an automatic 10-business-day wait for every buyer under 21.

Age restrictions also depend on the type of firearm and the transaction. AMP will follow the requirements in effect at the time of transfer.

Having Your Firearm Shipped to Another FFL?

Choose a receiving FFL that is willing to handle your transfer. Ask the dealer to email a copy of its current FFL to AMP and include your name and auction invoice number so we can match the license to your purchase.

    Email: contact@amp-tag.com   |   Phone: 936-594-0812

The receiving dealer may charge its own transfer fee. Buyers should confirm that fee and any local requirements directly with their chosen FFL.

    Used Firearms & Condition

Many firearms offered at auction are pre-owned. Unless specifically stated otherwise in the auction terms or lot description, buyers should not assume that a used firearm has been test-fired or inspected for safe operation by AMP. Review the lot information carefully and consider having a qualified gunsmith inspect a used firearm before firing it.

    Firearm Auction FAQ

Can I win a firearm online and have it mailed directly to my home?

For firearms that require an FFL transfer, no. When shipping is required, AMP sends the firearm to an eligible receiving FFL, where the buyer completes the applicable transfer process.

Can someone else bid for me or complete my transfer?

The transaction must accurately identify the actual buyer/transferee. Register and bid using your own information when you will be the buyer, and contact AMP before bidding if the circumstances are unusual or you have questions about who should register.

Do I need to send AMP a copy of my receiving dealer’s FFL?

Yes, when AMP will be shipping your firearm to another dealer. Have the receiving FFL email its current license to contact@amp-tag.com with your name and auction invoice number.

Does every buyer under 21 wait 10 business days?

No. Federal law provides an enhanced review process for buyers under 21. The additional period applies when NICS indicates that further investigation is needed; it can extend the investigatory period to as much as 10 business days in total.

    Questions Before You Bid?

Firearm transactions can vary depending on the item and the buyer. If you are unsure about pickup, shipping or transfer requirements, contact Asset Marketing Pros before placing your bid.
